Why we built a new Foodzy app, and have you to thank for it

Since we opened up Foodzy for everyone on the 4th of july 2011, we’ve been amazed by the enthusiasm of our many users. Mind you, we started the service as a tool for ourselves to use and although we were pretty psyched about it, we really love all the different ways our most fanatic users (we lovingly call them our Foodigans ;-) have used the tool over the past year and a half. So when we decided that we should do a complete make-over of the platform, we raised the bar. Way up. Since we genuinely think that our Foodzy friends deserve nothing but the best.

Work on the new Foodzy started in december 2011. Coming from a development background, tying up platforms and services for fun&function, we really wanted the new Foodzy to be build on our own API. And so we started designing and gradually building our own API. After we wrapped up (no pun intended) the development of the API, Marjolijn started designing our new app. imageBeginning of the summer, we started development of the new iPhone and Android app. The previous version of the app was build with the help of developers at an external agency, but by now we wanted to build it ourselves. We decided to develop the app in-house. It turned out to be a roller coast ride we’re not going to forget easily. By now, we raised the bar so high, we were struggling to make the jump and release the app. We kept on bumping in to issues that hadn’t been done before and the project took up way more time then we planned for at the start. Launchdates moved from august to september to - eventually - october.

In the last few weeks, we’ve come to realize how valuable our friendship with the Foodzy community is. Not only did we receive excellent feedback on our apps from some of our (test) users, eventually some of them stood up and helped us out when we seemed to be totally stuck. So, a very warm and heart meant  ”thank you very much” seems in place! Our gratitude goes out to my old colleagues at Rhinofly for their help and advice on both of our apps, all of our Beta Test users, and to Wouter van den Broek and Colin Edwards for some very valuable help and tips on our Android apps when we needed them the most. And to all of you, my Foodzy friends, for using our service and giving us the positive energy to keep on going!

As I said, it was quite the roller coast ride. But we’re not done. We’ve seen you feedback and first reactions. If you have any remarks, be sure to mail them to us via support@foodzy.com, we’re reading all of them. We’ll continue to work on the apps until we are both satisfied. As said, our friend deserve nothing but the best.

ps. about that API…. :-)
